Sailing and sailors at our Club:-
|
Welcome to the Waimakariri Sailing Club.
Our club was established in 1928, and since then people of all ages have been enjoying the wonderful sailing conditions that our club offers.
Our main activities are racing on the river, social events and we offer a comprehensive learn to sail program held at a nearby lake. The learn to sail program is available to all members and is for adults and children alike. Our members enjoy a good amount of banter, competitive racing, beautiful views and |
most importantly, the enjoyment that is getting out on the water in their boat of choice.
If you are looking for somewhere to sail, to get back into sailing, to start sailing or to volunteer at a sailing club, then we would love to have you join us at the Waimakariri Sailing Club. Kind Regards, Sam Jones Waimakariri Sailing Club Commodore |
Waimakariri Sailing Club Early History
On 22 December 1927, the club was formed originally as a Power Boat Club. V J Gamble was chairman; however very few official records were kept until 1930. The yachting influence was spasmodic until 1931 when four or five gentlemen headed by Rex Sarjeant had the idea of starting a sailing club. The first meeting of the yacht club was held in a tin shed | owned by the Waimakariri Harbour Board on the banks of the Kaiapoi River in the vicinity of the existing Kaiapoi Post Office. A few years later Power Boat Club members dwindled and the two clubs joined together and became the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club on September 6 1934. The club was incorporated in 10 June 1954. |
